How to Free Up Disk Space on Windows Safely
When your drive is almost full, Windows slows down, updates fail and apps can crash. The good news is that you can usually recover many gigabytes with built-in tools.
Check where space is going
Open Settings → System → Storage. Windows shows a breakdown by category such as Apps, Temporary files, Documents and Pictures. Start with the largest category.
Turn on Storage Sense
Storage Sense automatically clears temporary files and empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule. Switch it on in the Storage page and choose how often it should run.
Remove temporary files
- In Storage, select Temporary files.
- Review the list. Items such as Delivery Optimization files and thumbnails are safe to remove.
- Be careful with the Downloads folder entry: it contains your own files, so check it first.
Uninstall apps you no longer use
Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, sort by size, and remove software you have not opened in months.
Move large personal files
Videos, photo libraries and old project folders can move to an external drive or a cloud storage service. Always keep a second copy; read about the 3-2-1 backup rule before deleting originals.
Things not to do
- Do not delete files from the Windows or Program Files folders by hand.
- Do not disable the page file or hibernation without understanding the effect.
- Do not use "registry cleaner" tools; they rarely help and can cause problems.
